Mérida has an
association of qualified instructors numbering about 15. Many are acrobatic trained
and represent the country in world paragliding events. Tandem rides are available
either through the many tourist offices, or directly with the pilots. Flights
usually last 40 minutes minimum and the landings take place either on the mountaintop
launching point or down in the dry river bed, thousands of feet below. The
cost is about $50 and includes pick-up and return to your place of lodging. Allow for a
half-day with the pick-up in mid afternoon and return after dark. With over 15,000
flights (nearly all with tourists), there has been one accident, and it involved two
instructors practicing new aerobatics.
The experience, soaring with the birds, with the dynamics of the
Andes Mountains, is with out a doubt a must- for those so inclined. Classes for solo
flight may take a couple of weeks and can cost between $250 and $300. Delta wing soaring Here, the risk factor is higher than
paraglideing and you should be in good physical condition. Merida has ten instructors who
offer solo training (or renting of equipment to those qualified) as well as tandem
rides. The prices are similar to above, but the rides are not, with the wing being
more responsive than the chute-like wing of the paraglider. If your in good shape,
why not try both!!
