Visit the Taste of Andino

Culinary art is locally identifiable and expressed differently in the various villages of the Andes.  The meals, embellishments, flavors and presentation of the foods vary from village to village.   Many of the family "cooking secrets" can be traced back generations and while the keeper of the secret may have moved with her new husband to a different village, the people of the Andes know and attribute certain recipes and foods to certain locals.   Visit the various places selling foods and meals in La Mesa, and you are sure to find things that identify with this village.

Welcome To The Association of Homemakers

Hand Made

Members of the La Mesa Association of Homemakers meet regularly on Sunday mornings after church in a storefront building across from the Plaza Bolívar. Since 1980 they have gathered to exchange recipes, craft skills, town gossip, AND to sell their hand made foods and crafts to their neighbors, visiting Mérideños and tourists.  With three sugar mills in town, it's not surprising to find a large varity of "sweets".  Many of the candy formulas and recipes are locally identifiable.   The Homemakers Shoppe features a wide variety of candies, jellies, cakes, toronjas (baked, sweetened oranges), parchitas (passion fruit), arequipe (thick, rich chocolate made from whole milk) and many other taste treats. The prices are reasonable, and they will make fine gifts for friends back home.
